ASEAN culture week is one of the characteristic theme activities in AISL Harrow Nanning: the study and experience of the theme culture of an ASEAN country every month enables students to travel to Southeast Asia at school without leaving home.
ASEAN culture week is coming again! This time, the students seemed to be in Vietnam, Experience Vietnam’s beautiful mountains and rivers and diversity, Inclusive and diverse culture.

On March 9th, the ASEAN Culture Week – Vietnam Theme Week was successfully sponsored by Harrow Nanning. Together with the personnel of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Nanning, the instructors and students embarked on an incredible cultural adventure between China and Vietnam. ASEAN Culture Week is one of Harrow Nanning’s distinctive theme activities: each month, pupils learn and experience a different ASEAN nation, allowing them to travel to Southeast Asia without leaving home.
In 2021, China and ASEAN officially announced the China ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which will strengthen cooperation across a range of sectors, including politics, economics and commerce, and humanistic interactions. Nanning, as China’s key city confronting ASEAN, is increasingly connecting with ASEAN nations. Harrow Nanning responds to the national demand to foster friendly relations between ASEAN nations and China by arranging cultural exchange events aimed at establishing a platform for educational and cultural interchange between Nanning and ASEAN countries. Also, the events aim to instill pupils with a sense of pride in their city, to broaden their awareness of ASEAN countries, and to foster cultural tolerance.
China and Vietnam are connected by mountains and sea and share a rich cultural background. Vietnam has gotten great support from the Consulate General of Vietnam in Nanning as the first theme nation for the 2022 Harrow Nanning ASEAN Culture Week initiative.
“Food is the lifeblood of the people,” and Vietnamese cuisine is well-known around the world. People from all around the world like spring rolls, chicken noodles, and Vietnamese coffee. The Vietnam Culture Week focused on “food” as the primary experience and introduced students to Vietnamese cuisine and culture. Students dressed up as chefs and learnt how to make Vietnamese food throughout the week. On the day of the event, instructors dressed in Vietnamese odysseys and demonstrated traditional Vietnamese costumes to students, who observed and touched them to learn the difference between Vietnamese and Chinese traditional costumes.
Mr Do Nam Trung, Consul of the Consulate General of Vietnam in Nanning, and his entourage paid a visit to the school on the day of the celebration and attended classes to engage with the pupils. “Harrow Nanning looks forward to working with the Consul General of the Consulate General of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam in Nanning, both now and in the near future, to promote the development of education and cultural exchange,” Mr Neil Clayton, General Inspector of Harrow Nanning, stated in his speech. Mr Do Nam Trung then addressed the audience in excellent Chinese, remarking on, “Vietnam as a country and its culture are highly distinctive, and over the course of its colorful history, it has absorbed other civilizations. Vietnam and China are linked by geography, principles, and culture, and we share the Chinese’s passion for their nation and people. I hope you enjoy Vietnam as much as I do”.
Representatives of Harrow Nanning students kicked off the event by performing proficient Chinese and English songs for the event’s international attendees. Mr Do Nam Trung took us on a tour of the stunning mountains and rivers of Vinh Ha Long Bay, Vietnam, as well as the fascinating Ho Chi Minh City. Additionally, the Vietnamese music enlivened the mood and demonstrated the vibrant culture of Vietnam to all the Chinese and international students and professors in attendance.
